When I try to modify settings under the "Settings" tab, it tells me "File Not Writeable!" after I hit save. what do i need to do? is there a file or directory i need to CHMOD?

I had the same problem, then I debugged a little bit and found it:
You've to chmod 666 the file [joomla_root]/administrator/components/com_alphacontent/alphacontent_config.php
